New Study on the Provision of Care for Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Patients

The cancer burden across the EU is increasing annually. In 2022, the number of new cases reached 2.7 million, with an estimated 1.3 million cancer-related deaths. This Study is part of Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan, committed to combating the rising burden of cancer, and the Horizon Europe Cancer Mission, aimed at improving the quality of life of cancer patients.

This Study is particularly relevant as Adolescents and Young Adults (AYA), being in a distinct age group between childhood and adulthood, require specialised care. This includes tailored support for issues such as fertility concerns, psychological well-being, education and career development, body image, sexuality and relationships, and alcohol/substance abuse.  However, there is no established and actionable ideal type of AYA cancer care.

Therefore, the objective of this Study is to identify the challenges and facilitators for providing quality care to AYAs throughout their cancer journey. To do so, the provision of healthcare to AYA cancer patients and survivors across the EU Member States, Iceland and Norway will be assessed. It includes mapping existing approaches, identifying barriers and enabling factors to the integration of dedicated AYA services, and highlighting best practices and innovative approaches to the provision of healthcare to AYA cancer patients and survivors.

Spark is delighted to carry out this Study for the European Commission (DG HADEA) in consortium with ICF. It will combine desk research and various stakeholder consultations. The results of this research will help to develop tailored recommendations for  each individual EU Member State, Iceland and Norway, based on their specific context, healthcare infrastructure, policy landscape, and identified needs and barriers.
