Results of the Study on the Profession of Veterinary Surgeons

On 17th June 2022, Spark Legal Network had the chance to present the results of the Study on assessing the scientific and technical developments in relation to the profession of Veterinary Surgeons to the Group of Coordinators (‘GOC’) for Directive 2005/36/EC, during a meeting organised by DG GROW.

The Study has been finalised and Spark is eager to see how it will impact on the shaping and adaptation of the text of Directive 2005/36/EC, which contributes to the promotion of the free movement of professionals whilst ensuring an adequate level of qualification across the Member States.

Directive 2005/36/EC sets out rules for the recognition of qualifications as well as EU-level harmonised minimum training requirements for seven sectoral professions. Among these, minimum subjects, knowledge, skills (and linked competences) are provided for veterinary surgeons’ education. As provided to in the Directive, these requirements could be updated by a delegated act of the Commission, taking into account of generally acknowledged scientific and technical progress.

The objective of the Study was to support the Commission in its assessment of whether to propose an adaptation of the minimum subjects, knowledge and skills (and linked competences) for the profession of veterinary surgeon under Directive 2005/36/EC. Data related to national training requirements was collected among Member States with the help of a great team of national experts. The preliminary findings were shared with relevant stakeholders during a workshop, when further feedback was gathered.

The results flew into the Final Study, which has been published here.
